The experience during driving can be changed just by the type of music that is listened to. Hot Chelle Ray’s new CD album Whatever that recently came out is a great CD for a car ride.

The first and second songs on the album are the very commonly heard on the radio songs I like it like that and Tonight Tonight. Hot Chelle Ray has many other songs on this album that are pump up songs.

Two songs that, if released to the radio, will be very much liked. Downtown girl which is a great dance song and a song that can just make the car ride more enjoyable. The other song Beautiful Freaks lets people know that it’s okay to be expressive because we are all Beautiful Freaks.

I give this album an A+, because it makes my car ride enjoyable and gives a great message

According to the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, a new driver’s education program is up and running implementing that parents need to take a 90 minute education class with their teens, if the teens are seeking a driver’s permit under the age of 18.

This concept first started in New Jersey, hoping they could reduce car crashes among young drivers.

This new law is quickly causing controversy among the citizens.

Parents feel that one time of education enough for them. Since these parents are agitated that they have to be there at the class, I don’t think that they will take the class seriously or learn anything new from it.

In the future, I don’t think that Kansas should implement this system because all it will do is waste more of the government money.

During the summer I went to St. Louis for a basketball tournament. It was the very first tournament of the year for my AAU basketball team (MoKan). We left for St. Louis around 8 in the morning. We met at the community center called Hillcrest. We met with the other three
players who lived in town who also played on Mokan which is from Kansas City. We had a packed car with my dad, Stepmom, little brother, a player on the team, and me. As we hit the road, we put on a movie, we got from the Redbox. But I put in my head phones and fell asleep.

I woke up as we were just outside of St. Louis. We headed straight to the hotel we were staying at. It was in the middle of downtown and really nice. The team paid for it. Our room was towards the top. We could see almost the whole city.

Our first game was at 8 p.m. the same night as we arrived. We played a team from Chicago. We won by 7. We stayed after the game to watch our older and younger teams play. Then we headed back to the hotel and ordered pizza. The next day we played three games. We won all
three. The day after we were in the semifinals, and we lost to a team called Ray Allen Select. They couldn’t miss even if they wanted to. We lost by 12. We ended up taking fourth in the tournament.

Every few months the orchestra performs a concert. The orchestra’s concerts are always free and anyone can come! The most recent concert the orchestra has performed was the February concert. The February concert took place on Feb. 9 in the South Commons.

The conductors of the concert were Martha Barnhill, Nicolas Carr, and student teacher Charlotte Parrish. The three conductors worked extremely hard to make sure that all the songs sounded their best. The orchestra had been practicing the music for a couple months and in that time period the conductors helped the students learn things about the music like phrasing, note reading, and getting notes in tune. A lot of tedious work and practice goes into preparing for a concert, and because of that, Barnhill, Carr, and Parrish deserve special recognition for making everything work out so well.

First, the Concert Orchestra performed the songs, Brook Green Suite by Gustav Holst, and Pavane by Ravel/Isaac. Then the Symphonic Orchestra took stage and played the songs Capriol Suites by Peter Warlock, Serenade for Stings by Tschaikowsky, and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony Finale by Beethoven/ Leidig. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony wasn’t only played by the orchestra, but the band as well.

The final closing song was Jupiter-Bringer of Jollity, from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. The final song was special because it included all the Concert Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra, and band. The three different groups combined created a booming sound, which is perfect for the song for Jupiter.

Reading, reading and more reading, seems to cover the class syllabus for the college class Introduction to Literature.

Introduction to Literature is provided through Washburn University and taught by teachers Holly Wetmore and Kevin Johnston.

The textbook used for the class is Exploring Literature. The works of literature in the book are divided into three major groups: fiction, poetry,
and drama. Going deeper into the book, the stories are then divided into themes.

The themes are family and friends, innocence and experience, women and men, culture and identity, and finally faith and doubt.

The textbook includes a variety of well-known authors, ranging from William Shakespeare to the Grimm brothers to Emily Dickinson. With over 1,300 pages of stories there is an endless variety of good literature.

Both Wetmore and Johnston teach their classes how to conduct a response journal. A response journal is a journal the student keeps to jot down their thoughts, summarize, and ask questions about the story they have just read. A response should be half a page to a page long, and include multiple details from the story. The journals are turned into the teachers on a regular basis to be read and graded. The students actually seem to enjoy writing them as well.

“My favorite thing about the response journals is that our opinions actually get to be heard because in many classes it’s all about only learning things and not relating it to actual life,” senior Jayda Ayala said.

In Charlie Appelhanz’s AP World History class, he put together a team building exercise for the new semester.

The entire class had to figure out how to get out of a maze, but the really tricky part was if you got a step wrong you had to trace your steps back out of the maze.

The maze consisted of a square grid. The object of the maze was to not only remember what the path is, but to also make sure everybody else in the class got through it.

Overall, it was a challenging activity that definitely took a lot of focus. The most challenging part of the maze was that you had to follow the rules that Appelhanz as “Maze Master” enforced.

The rules included being completely silent, not touching the maze, not touching the person going through the maze, and not entering the “Maze Masters” designated space.

If somebody were to break one of these rules they would hear a “buzz” and know that they just got an extra minute added to the entire class time.

Within all the classes, the average was about 20 minutes until the maze was completed and the classes had about 4 “buzzes” each time they tried.

Even with all the frustrating missteps and the tough but fair rules all the kids in the class had a lot of fun. At the end of the activity the class got together to have a group discussion and they came to a consensus that the activity was enlightening and frustrating.

The film Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close follows a boy named Oskar Schnell as he tries to unravel one last mystery left behind by his father who died on September 11, 2001.

The film used a variety of film techniques to achieve a certain effect on the audience. Close ups, high angles, and neutral lighting was used to see character reactions.
Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock played major characters in the film as Oskar Schnell’s parents. Thomas Schnell was portrayed very well by Thomas Horn, who was able to play the part of a child scarred by 9/11.
The overall film is very captivating for it uses flash backs to September 11, 200,1to see what each of the Schnells were doing that day. The flash backs are explain why some things are the way they are in the present for the Schnells.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is a good film for anyone to see alone or in a group. The film uses film techniques and plotline goes together so well that it will captivate the audience.
Author’s personal grade of the film: B+

Throughout the years many things have come and gone, but my volleyball coach and team, Stuart Johnson, has remained the same.

When I joined the Kansas Networks Volleyball Club in the middle of the season a few years ago, I was warmly welcomed. All of the girls were nice, and Stuart was very welcoming, and he made sure I was doing alright. I immediately fit in with the team.

During a tough game, Stuart never gets mad. If a mistake is made, he just says, “Flush it, and move on to the next play.” That always gets my mind off of the mistake I just made. The girls are very supportive of on another.

He isn’t just a coach, he is an friend. I feel as if I can trust him with anything. He will always help us make the right choices.

Although it may seem as if a volleyball team just gets together four times a week and practices, we are much more than that. We are a family. Thanks for being such a great coach and team.

Over Winter Break I watched an inspiring film called The Blind Side. It’s a true story about Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), a homeless boy who became an All American football player and an NFL first round draft.

S.J. Tuohy (Jae Head), the son of the family that took Michael into care, discovered him. The Tuohy family was on their way home as S.J. pointed to a tall man walking in the cold rain. Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) told her husband to turn the car around and pick him up. Sean (Tim McGraw) was a little skeptical at first but then decided to stop.

Leigh Anne let Michael stay on the family couch that night. One night turned into months that led to him having his own room in the Tuohy household. The family enrolled him into a local high school where he became a football star.

This film inspired me to follow my lifelong dream to become a tennis pro and to never give up.

Overall, I give this movie an A because the exposition was the perfect pace where it showed the right amount of information where the resolution was fast and didn’t show us a lot about his life in the NFL.

My top five most anticipated movies of 2012 are at number one, The Breaking Dawn Part Two. Twilights fans never fail to make Twilight number one.

Number two is The Dark Knight Rises. Batman is a classic; this movie is bound to draw a major crowd to the theaters.

Number Three would be The Avengers. With Ironman, Thor, Captain America, the Incredible hulk, who wouldn’t be excited for this action packed film?

At number four, The Hunger Games. From the bestselling book by Suzanne Collins it is sure to be a hit in theaters.
And lastly number five, The Amazing Spider Man. It’s hard to top movies that have already been made, but this new Spider Man is sure to catch the audience’s attention.
