“I never knew that babysitting a four-year-old (Grayson) and nine-year-old (Micollette) for about a month would be so much fun,” junior Diana Korbe said.
One morning over the summer Korbe woke up to Grayson running around in the kitchen. Korbe asked her mom what the kids where doing at the house, and where the three-year-old Brighton was. Korbe’s mom answered that Brighton’s parents had taken him to the emergency room.
“At first I was a little scared, but thought that the nurses would know what to do, and he would be back home that evening,” Korbe said.
When getting news that Brighton’s trip to the ER would now lead him to KU Med in Kansas City made Korbe look at the situation 100 times different.
“When I heard the news that Brighton was diagnosed with T cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoblastic Lymphoma cancer, I didn’t know what to do,” Korbe said.
Korbe enjoyed taking Micollette and Grayson to go swimming, watching Micollette’s softball games, watching movies, playing games and being entertained by the cute things that they would say and do throughout the day. Korbe and her family would visit Brighton at KU Med once a week, so the Taylor’s could be with all of their kids for a few hours.
“It was very sad seeing Brighton hooked up to all different kinds of machines, and when he started chemo, he started losing his hair, but I think he could definitely pull off the bald look,” Korbe said.
As of February 7, 2011, Brighton’s cancer is gone, and he only has to have a spinal tap and chemo once a month.
